Flying High at the Foot of the Rockies

Sunset behind the mountain
Sunset

I traveled to Raton, New Mexico to help my daughter and son-in-law with my grandbaby while they went to a wedding. I took advantage of the opportunity to get some drone photography. I am pleased with how it turned out. I especially like the sunset pictures.

Another Day at Crowder

I went out to visit my parents in Weatherford, and my dad and I went fishing. We didn’t catch anything, but I did get these pictures with my drone. Which one is your favorite?

Surveying Family Land

This week of thankfulness has me thinking of those who have gone before, but also the hope of youth. My nephew and I have been discussing improvements to this 80 acres of land my father-in-law bought in the early 1990s. He bought it to have a place to go into the woods with his family. He, my brother-in-law, and I had some good times, hiking, hunting, and camping out there, We planned and plotted all the improvements we wanted to make so Papaw (my father-in-law) could hand down a precious gift to his grandkids.

My father-in-law passed away in 1996, and my brother-in-law moved to Texas around the year 2000 and passed away in 2015. He was able to pass a love of that land on to his son, my nephew, who has me excited about it again. I haven’t been on the land really in 20+ years. He and some friends have repaired the fence and cleared some of the brush. There’s a lot still to do, but I have the same desire as Papaw maybe even more. I would love to build a home there and hold classes for people on a variety of topics just like I do now in my day job, but my focus would be on how God has given us this great world and we can learn so much from being a part of it. The second picture in the gallery below shows right where I would put my Earthship.

Day in the Park

I had a chance to fly in the Buck Thomas park as the Moore High School Key Club did their service in the park. The wind was wild, but I flew anyway just to improve my skills. The video below is a little shaky in parts, but overall, I think the drone did very well.

Talimena Scenic Drive

My wife and I drove to Talihina, Ok on a beautiful Fall Friday for my first visit to the Talimena Scenic Drive. It was a great day to see so much of eastern Oklahoma I had never seen before. Apparently, it was “Casual Cow Friday.” Most of the thousands of cows we drove by were laying in the grass enjoying the sunshine. I checked with the ranger station before getting the drone out on the scenic drive. The ranger said the trees were in the middle of the turn. We stuck to the main drive on the Oklahoma side of the drive. I hope to go back and find some more spots to fly from with a bit more interest in the foreground. The vistas are great, but really they let people see long distances. I hope to get back when the trees are more colorful. I guess that means a part 2 if I can.

Crowder Lake

I took my dad out to show off my Mavic Air 2. It was windy and cold, which dad hates both, but I convinced him to bundle up so I could show him how this drone responds to conditions. He was convinced I would blow it into the lake.

The drone did fine until it got closer to 30 meters up. At that altitude, it started to give me warnings, so I descended to keep it from blowing away as my dad feared it would. I was still able to get some good pictures. The overcast sky gave a softness to the light that suffused everything. The overall greyness gives a neutral feeling to the landscape. I wouldn’t want to see it every day, but here in late October, it seems appropriate.
